Such was the applaud and appreciation for the Hanover performance, that Mayuri was commnissioned to choreograph as stunnin and as meaningful a piece for the Mumbai leg of Make In India ceremony. The brief, this time, was just 3 words – “show modern India.”
Held at the Dome, NSCI SVP Stadium, this piece showcased not just India’s traditional, folk and classical art forms, but also showcased modern art forms like futuristic contemporary, hip-hop, skating, gymnastics, and India’s technological advancement, and was a visual marvel. Broken up into various segments, this consortium comprised stellar performances by an array of mask-performers (Chhau, the Theyyam & Putiram), headgears inspired by ritual forms of Kerala, different saree drapes of India, several folk dance forms – Mehar Raas, Kolaata, Patta Kuniha, Bhangra, Kathak, Skaters, Stompers, Nagada drummers, Manipuri drummers, Dollu Kunitha, Dhak & Dhunuchi – and a group of future contemporary dancers showing a new India.
84 dancers, selected from across India, showcased 16 dance forms in 16 minutes with the backdrop of a life size LED screen celebrating our technical brilliance from ancient times till the modern – including our space missions, the world’s first cataract surgery performed by Sushruta, Aryabhatta’s mathematical genius, and much much more. The audience was overwhelmed patriotism, love, awe and pride for India and her achievements!
